Preventing Violent Extremism: An Independent Evaluation of the Birmingham Pathfinder
Author(s):
This independent report, undertaken by Waterhouse Consulting Group on behalf of Birmingham City Council, evaluates the implementation of the Government’s Pathfinder Fund: a project set up to support local authorities in preventing violent extremism (PVE) across Muslim communities. The aim of the report is to examine: first, whether the Birmingham Pathfinder has been effective in relation to the Government’s National Indicators 35 Building Resilience to Violent Extremism, second, to explore the views of those people delivering the local PVE projects as well as a sample of those participating in such projects. Finally, to make recommendations for future work in this area. Broadly it finds that Birmingham’s Pathfinder projects have impacted positively on their participants with the potential to make a real impact in the future on the life of the whole community. However, at the outset, Birmingham City Council has had to grapple with the term Preventing Violent Extremism as this was seen by many Muslim community members and some stakeholders as insulting, provocative and labeling those that who had or have nothing to do violent extremism.
