The recent arrest of a number of individuals suspected of planning a terrorist attack at the 2012 London Olympic Games is a timely reminder of the security threats that face the Games. Confining the original security budget to the paper bin and almost doubling the number of security personnel at key venues and events, Olympic and government coordinators have worked hard over recent years to anticipate every security eventuality which could ‘threaten the continuity’ of the Games. Yet would-be terrorists may not be the only ones to sense an opportunity, far right movements could also have a lot to gain from the Games as well., The Games may be a prime target for extreme right mobilisation and activity. Britain’s extreme right has tended to operate primarily on the local level, capitalising on local issues and community tensions. However, the Games offer an unprecedented international platform for the extreme right to gain global attention and media coverage. Furthermore, the dates of the Games coincide with the month of Ramadan, a potentially significant period for extreme right movements, given their history of violence around major Muslim centres and mosques, notably in the Olympic boroughs., As London gears up for the Games, this report stresses the need to ensure effective responses are in place to the potential threat from the far right, whether that be from a major violent attack or threats to community safety and inter-community relations. While the former might attract the most headlines, the latter would arguably leave the most lasting harmful legacy.
