The concept of the Young Democracy Ambassador was proposed in the 2012 Action Plan to Prevent Violent Extremism, operated by the Finnish Interior Ministry. It was initiated in part due to the unique vulnerabilities of young people, and their susceptibility to joining and engaging with violent extremist groups., The Young Democracy Ambassador has a multi-faceted portfolio: to participate in the discussion of democracy and introduce themes to the government that are important to young people, maintain an active internet and social media presence to communicate with other young people, operate forums for young people to discuss key social and policy issues they find important, and collaborate with key youth organisations and youth councils all over Finland.
