Preventing Violent Extremism Together

The UK Government’s counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST, is made up of four inter-connected elements that support the ultimate aim of countering terrorism and allowing people to go about their daily lives, The Prevent strand, known as Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE), is run by the Department for Communities and Local Government and was developed after a series of consultations with British Muslims following the London bombings of July 7th 2005. These identified key areas where policy could be improved, including better engaging with young people and women, who had previously been left out of debates that centred around ‘community leaders’ and supporting grassroots community initiatives to do this. This was implemented through the Preventing Violent Extremism Action Plan of April 2007. This centred around promoting shared values, through strengthening the civic and religious leaders in a community and supporting local problems to local solutions.
