Islamic State, Radicalisation and the Recruitment of Foreign Fighters in Australia: The pull to make hijrah from the lucky country to God’s nation
Author(s):
Radicalisation and the recruitment of young people to become foreign terrorist fighters
in Syria and Iraq represents a serious problem in Australia, and no one quite understands
why the problem is as great as it is. Groups like Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS)
and the al-Nusra Front have been remarkably effective in recruiting foreign fighters
from around the world. Counter-intuitively, this recruitment appears just as effective in
prosperous, multi-cultural Australia – the “lucky country” – as in recession-burdened
Europe.
