The continuity of elites gave strong expression to the pre-Islamic components of Southeast AsianIslamic
civilization. In the regions of Indonesia and Malaysia an overwhelming majority of the
population eventually accepted an Islamic identity while Muslims remained a minority in the
Philippines.
