Based on original fieldwork in Jakarta and Central Sulawesi, including interviews with 23 current and former Poso-based jihadists, this article examines the emotional, psychological, rational, and relational factors that can lead militants to turn away from terror tactics. The article contends that Poso jihadis are disengaging from violence both physically and psychologically because of several interrelated factors including increased police capacity, the expansion of interpersonal relationships outside of the jihadi circle and a growing disillusionment with the ideologies of their groups.
