Ad-hoc Meeting on Online Radicalisation and Disinformation in the Western Balkans

Background
A dangerous mix of online radicalisation and disinformation is increasingly targeting the Western Balkans. From influence-driven extremist content to unchecked hate speech in local languages, the region faces growing vulnerabilities. Governments, civil society, and tech platforms must act swiftly and collaboratively to counter these threats. This ad-hoc meeting will bring together key stakeholders to explore the evolving nexus between radicalisation and disinformation, and to co-develop actionable strategies for resilience and response.
Objectives
Participants will engage in four interactive sessions (expert panels) to:
- Analyse current trends and vulnerabilities in the Western Balkans
- Explore hybrid narratives linking radicalisation and disinformation
- Assess government responses and identify gaps
- Define urgent capacity-building needs
- Discuss platform accountability and content moderation
- Align regional efforts with EU frameworks such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Terrorist Content Online regulation
Who should apply?
We invite applications from practitioners and experts from the Western Balkans working in the field of online radicalisation, including:
- First-line practitioners
- Researchers and academics
- Civil society representatives
- Professionals from high-tech companies and digital platforms
Applicants should have demonstrable experience or active engagement in countering online radicalisation and/or disinformation.
