The purpose of this book is to outline the issues and challenges for education and its relation to terrorism and security and propose a number of ways in which education can be utilized to counter violent extremism through the lens of human security. The first of the essays outlines the theoredical framework for how and why education may be a component in reducing the threat of terrorism. The second set of essays presents several cases within the United States for the relevance of education to terrorism. However, these three essays focus more on civic and cultural values in the American education system, rather than directly addressing violent extremism. Finally, the third set of essays presents case studies where education, more specifically peace education, is one tool for mitigating conflicts related to terrorism. These case studies are from Indonesia, Iraq, Northern Ireland and Sierra Leone. While the book does not quite use the language of countering violent extremism, it does provide useful frameworks for how to connect education to CVE, and presents some anecdotal evidence that suggests that education can be a protective factor to prevent violent extremism.
