Harmony Through Hockey
Author(s):
Established in Philadelphia, Harmony Through Hockey now operates its successful programme in Des Moines, Iowa. The programme was instituted with founder Frank Meeink’s previous experiences in mind. Meeink was heavily involved as a recruiter for numerous neo-Nazi, separatists, and KKK organisations but following his incarceration he gradually abandoned his extremist ideological beliefs using sport as an outlet and impetus., With his own experiences in mind, Meeink established Harmony Through Hockey in a bid to foster spirituality and provide an alternative to recruitment by extremist gangs for susceptible children and young adults from across backgrounds. Through self-esteem and team-building sessions with teammates from different backgrounds, children are witness to the fissures in their hateful ideology sooner.
