This chapter is part of a book dedicated to the memory of Professor Philip Taylor. It critically reviews existing assessments about the role of media and communication technologies in the current phenomenon of international terrorism. It demonstrates that most approaches are based on either flawed assumptions or outdated theories. It makes the point that an explicit engagement with communication theory and media studies supports not only a greater understanding of the phenomenon in an age of interconnectedness, but could also inform more effective counterterrorism practice.
