Seeded in 2010 in response to the anxieties that result from the threat of terrorism and extremism and the supplementary fissures these issues have exhibited, namely within Western society and especially in Europe. These fissures have highlighted long-standing questions about identity, values, the nature of citizenship and democratic culture. Contemporaneous to this the seeming failure of domestic integration processes, in addition to growing social and economic polarisation amongst Europe’s diverse communicates, has contributed to the popular misperception that the West has lost its moral authority. This has encouraged both secular and religious extremist movements., Phoenix: An Inter-Community Initiative for a New Centre Ground is facilitated by the Institute of Strategic Dialogue (ISD), London, and aims to develop a more robust centre ground capable of marginalising different ideological extremes through an exploration of moral, philosophical and practical underpinnings. The initiative aims to explore ways in which societies can rekindle a broad-based, intellectual and ethical framework of necessary principles capable of stimulating public support as a basis for addressing the major local and global challenges of the present day.
